At least one person has been confirmed dead after a storey building collapsed on Aromire Avenue, Opposite Dominos Pizza, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The Permanent Secretary, of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said this in a statement on Thursday. He said the building, formerly occupied by Kilims Mart was being worked on by unskilled labourers, resulting in a partial collapse.

Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening when the storey building suddenly collapsed.

Oke-Osanyintolu said: “LASEMA responded to distress calls and upon arrival, discovered that a storey building formerly occupied by Kilims Mart, was being worked on by unskilled labourers resulting in a partial collapse. An adult male reported to be a welder lost his life instantly at the scene. His remains were recovered and removed from the scene.”

He said post-disaster assessment conducted by the agency’s LRT indicates that the building is stable and does not pose a threat to other structures in the area.

The Permanent Secretary said the building has been cordoned off and Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and Nigeria Police have been contacted for further action.
Over 30 cases of collapsed buildings have been recorded in various parts of Lagos State between January 2022 and January 2023.
