In a groundbreaking move set to position Nigeria at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovation in Africa, the Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a $7.5 million partnership agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to establish the Nigerian Artificial Intelligence (AI) Scaling Hub.

The agreement, formalized during a high-level ceremony in Abuja, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward digital transformation, technological independence, and inclusive economic growth. The new AI Scaling Hub aims to catalyze homegrown AI solutions tailored to Nigeria’s development priorities in healthcare, agriculture, education, and financial inclusion.

Bridging Innovation and Development

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, praised the partnership as a bold step forward in democratizing access to cutting-edge technology. “This is not just an investment in technology; it’s an investment in our people, our talent, and our future,” he said. “The AI Scaling Hub will empower Nigerian researchers, startups, and institutions to co-create solutions that directly address our local challenges.”

Local Talent, Global Impact

With a focus on inclusive development, the Hub will prioritize building capacity among young innovators, academics, and public sector leaders. It will serve as a national center for AI research, development, and deployment, supporting startups and civil society organizations in ethically applying AI to solve real-world problems.

The Gates Foundation’s Director of Global Growth & Opportunity, Dr. Priya Dube, expressed optimism about the collaboration. “Nigeria has a vibrant innovation ecosystem and a wealth of untapped potential. This partnership is about unlocking that potential to ensure AI works for everyone—especially underserved communities.”

Strategic Vision for a Digital Nigeria

The Nigerian AI Scaling Hub aligns with the Federal Government’s recently launched National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which seeks to position Nigeria as a leader in ethical and inclusive AI development across Africa. The initiative is expected to attract additional international and private-sector investments and foster a thriving AI ecosystem.

As part of the agreement, $3 million will be immediately disbursed to kick-start foundational programs, including grants for AI-powered public services, AI governance research, and startup incubation. The remaining funds will support infrastructure, data systems, and regional AI partnerships.

Looking Ahead

Experts believe the AI Scaling Hub could become a model for other African nations seeking to balance technological advancement with inclusive development. If successful, Nigeria could set a precedent for how AI can be used to improve lives—not just in labs and boardrooms, but in communities and villages across the continent.

This strategic alliance between the FG and the Gates Foundation underscores a shared belief: that technology, when locally driven and equitably scaled, can be a powerful force for good.
