The Federal Government has disclosed that about 15.2 million housing units across Nigeria are structurally inadequate, underscoring the depth of the country’s housing crisis.
According to the government, many of the affected buildings fall short of basic safety and quality standards, exposing millions of Nigerians to risks associated with substandard construction, poor materials and weak regulatory enforcement.
Officials noted that the figure highlights not only the nation’s housing deficit but also the urgent need to address the condition of existing homes, particularly in rapidly growing urban centres where pressure on infrastructure remains intense.
The Federal Government said it is working with state governments, regulators and private sector stakeholders to improve building standards, strengthen compliance with planning laws and promote affordable housing delivery.
