The Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) has intensified efforts to improve retirement preparedness among public servants, urging workers to begin planning for retirement early and keep their pension records up to date, amid growing concerns that poor documentation and inadequate awareness continue to delay access to retirement benefits under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The conmmission said many of the challenges experienced during retirement benefit processing stem from avoidable administrative lapses, stressing that workers who maintain accurate records with their Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) and understand the provision of the CPS are more likely to enjoy a seamless transition into retirement.
Speaking at a sensitization programme for public servants in active service in Lagos, the Director-General of LASPEC, Babalola Obilana, said retirement planning should be viewed as a lifelong process rather than an exercise undertaken only a few months before exiting the public service.
According to him, the Contributory Pension Scheme was introduced to guarantee financial security for workers after retirement through a transparent and sustainable pension system, but its benefits can only be fully realized when contributors take deliberate steps to keep their personal and employment records accurate and up to date.
Obilana said the programme was organized to educate workers on the procedures for processing retirement benefits, statutory documentation requirements and the respective roles of stakeholders involved in pension administration.
He noted that participants would also be guided on common errors that often delay the payment of retirement benefits and practical measures needed to avoid such setbacks.
“Retirement planning should not begin a few months before disengagement from service. It is a continuous process that requires informed decisions and proactive actions throughout one’s career,” he said.
The LASPEC boss explained that the commission had assembled experienced pension administrators and industry experts to provide practical guidance, clarify grey areas and address questions relating to retirement benefit administration under the CPS.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to the welfare of workers, saying the commission would continue to strengthen compliance with the Contributory Pension Scheme, improve pension administration and ensure retirees receive their entailments promptly and with dignity.
Obilana urged participants to extend the knowledge gained from the programme to colleagues across Ministries, Departments and Agrncies (MDAs), noting that increased awareness would reduce errors, improve compliance and enhance retirement preparedness within the public service.
A retiree and former Lagos State Civil Service, Funmilayo Adeyemi, said many workers underestimate the importance of proper documentation until they approach retirement.
She said,”Keeping your records updated with your Pension Fund Administrators throughout your years in service makes retirement much easier. Many of the delays people complain about could have been avoided if they had taken time to verify their records before retirement.”
