Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply condemned the latest ambassadorial nominees submitted by Bola Tinubu, branding parts of the list “shocking” and warning that it reflects a troubling tolerance for mediocrity, corruption and impunity.
Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed dismay that individuals he described as morally compromised and politically tainted were being positioned to represent Nigeria abroad at a time when millions are suffering under economic hardship and rising insecurity. “When our people are being killed our leaders are busy hosting dinners,” he lamented.
Obi’s remarks echo a broader outcry from opposition parties and civil-society voices, who question how figures alleged to have questionable records including a former national electoral commission chief could be entrusted with Nigeria’s diplomatic representation.
As the Senate prepares to begin screening hearings, the backlash raises fresh doubts about the list’s prospects in the upper chamber and casts a spotlight on what critics say is a deeper problem: the administration’s readiness to prioritise political patronage over national prestige.
