The Lagos State Police Command has announced an adjustment to the movement restriction order for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12. According to the updated directive, vehicular movement will now be restricted between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., instead of the previously anticipated full-day restriction.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the revision was made to strike a balance between security and the public’s convenience.

“This adjustment is part of our efforts to ensure a smooth, secure, and inclusive electoral process while minimizing undue hardship on residents,” the statement read. “We urge all eligible voters to take advantage of the voting window and adhere strictly to the new restriction hours.”

The police reassured Lagosians that adequate security personnel would be deployed across polling units, collation centres, and strategic locations throughout the state to ensure a peaceful election.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) had earlier confirmed that all preparations for the local government polls are in top gear, with sensitive materials already distributed to local councils. The elections will determine the leadership of the 20 constitutionally recognized local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

Residents are advised to stay informed, avoid non-essential movement during the restriction period, and cooperate with law enforcement personnel to ensure a hitch-free election.

Political parties, civil society groups, and observers have commended the police for the update, noting that it allows voters to return home safely after casting their ballots.
