Nigeria’s largest telecommunications operator, MTN Nigeria, is set to begin compensating subscribers following a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over recent service disruptions.

The move comes after widespread complaints from customers across major cities, including Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, who experienced network outages, poor call quality and data connectivity issues in recent weeks.

In a statement, the NCC said it had directed MTN Nigeria to provide appropriate compensation to affected subscribers in line with existing consumer protection regulations. The regulator emphasised that telecom operators are obligated to maintain quality of service standards and offer redress where service falls below acceptable thresholds.

MTN Nigeria confirmed it is working on modalities to implement the compensation, noting that affected customers would receive notifications outlining the form and timing of the relief measures. The company did not disclose the exact compensation package but indicated it could include bonus airtime, data allocations or service validity extensions.

Industry analysts say the directive underscores the NCC’s renewed focus on consumer rights and service accountability within the telecommunications sector.

A telecoms expert noted that while network disruptions are sometimes unavoidable due to technical upgrades or external factors, operators must ensure timely communication and adequate compensation to retain customer trust.

Subscribers, however, have expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the intervention while others argue that compensation alone may not address the recurring nature of service issues.

The development comes amid increasing demand for reliable telecom services, driven by Nigeria’s expanding digital economy and growing reliance on mobile connectivity for business, education and social interaction.

The NCC reiterated its commitment to monitoring compliance and warned that failure to adhere to its directive could attract further regulatory sanctions.

As MTN Nigeria moves to implement the compensation plan, stakeholders say sustained investment in network infrastructure will be critical to preventing future disruptions and improving overall service quality.
