The Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) has urged public servants in local council development areas to keep their pension records accurate to avoid delays in accessing benefits after retirement.
The commission advised. A sensitization programme on the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) held in Lagos.
LASPEC’s Director-General, Babalola Obilana, said the initiative aims to deepen awareness of the scheme and resolve issues that often cause delays in processing pension benefits.
“One of the highlights of the programme is the data recapture exercise. Many public servants are unaware that inaccurate records can cause unnecessary delays in accessing their pension benefits,” Obilana said. “By working closely with Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs), we are ensuring that every contributor’s record is accurate, up-to-date, and reflective of their service history.”
Obilana emphasized that the state’s focus goes beyond monthly deductions and remittances, stressing that retirement planning is about ensuring financial security and dignity after service.
He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for sustaining prompt and consistent pension payments under the Pay-As-You-Go model, which guarantees immediate benefits for retirees with complete documentation.
Also speaking, the Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said the success of the CPS depends on workers’ active involvement in updating their records.
“The Contributory Pension Scheme was created to provide sustainable retirement plans and financial security. Your active engagement during the data recapture process is critical to ensuring smooth and timely pension payments,” Agoro said in a speech delivered by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola.
Agoro added that inaccurate or outdated records remain the main cause of delays in payment of benefits.
The sensitisation programme, according to LASPEC, forms part of efforts to ensure that retirees enjoy timely access to their entitlements under the CPS.
