Nigeria generated an estimated US$62 million from airline ticket taxes in 2024, according to data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The revenue forms part of Africa’s broader $1.97 billion collected from ticket taxes during the year itself a fraction of the $60.3 billion generated globally from such levies.
IATA’s figures indicate Nigeria remains among the continent’s notable contributors to aviation-related tax income, despite the region as a whole accounting for a modest share of worldwide collections.
The data comes as Nigeria’s air travel sector adjusts to rising ticket-related charges. From December 1, 2025, international travellers departing or arriving in Nigeria are subject to a new security levy under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA)’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS).
Analysts say the $62 million revenue reflects growing demand for air travel and increased tax compliance, but warn that additional levies could further elevate travel costs for passengers.
