Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, NLNG Ship Management Limited (NSML), Abdulkadir Ahmed, has called for enforcement of existing International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the European Commission (EC) GreenHouse Gas (GHG) regulations for vessels calling at Nigerian ports.
Ahmed, who stated this, yesterday, in Lagos as Nigeria marked World Maritime Day with the theme, ‘New Technologies for Greener Shipping’. He said the country must set individual targets for emission reduction within the Nigerian maritime transportation space.
He said the government must ensure vessels calling at Nigerian Ports have the required Statement of Compliance with Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) regulations as well as carry verified emissions reports.
According to him, Nigeria must prepare a strategy based on the IMO and European Union (EU) targets to regulate international shipping. He said IMO targets to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work by, at least, 40 per cent by 2030, and 70 per cent by 2050.
He said IMO has also targeted the reduction of GHG emissions from international shipping by, at least, 50 per cent in 2050 compared to 2008, while the EU targets reducing GHG emissions by 55 per cent in 2030 with a plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
