The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has disclosed that telecommunications operators invested about N2.5 trillion in network infrastructure and expansion despite increasing consumer complaints over poor service quality across the country.

The commission said the investments were aimed at improving network capacity, expanding broadband penetration and enhancing service delivery amid growing demand for data and digital services.

Speaking on the state of the telecommunications industry, officials of the Nigerian Communications Commission said operators continued to commit significant resources to infrastructure upgrades, including fibre deployment, base stations and transmission facilities.

According to the commission, the investments were made against the backdrop of rising operational costs, foreign exchange challenges, energy costs and increased pressure on telecom infrastructure.

The NCC, however, acknowledged the growing number of complaints from subscribers relating to dropped calls, poor internet connectivity, network congestion and service interruptions in several parts of the country.

Industry stakeholders attributed some of the service challenges to vandalism of telecom infrastructure, limited access to right-of-way approvals, multiple taxation and persistent power supply issues affecting network operations.

The commission noted that while operators have made substantial investments to improve service quality, increasing data consumption and rapid growth in subscriber numbers have also placed additional strain on existing infrastructure.

Telecommunications companies have repeatedly called for stronger protection of critical national infrastructure, warning that frequent fibre cuts and attacks on telecom facilities continue to disrupt service delivery.

Analysts said sustained investment in telecom infrastructure remains critical to Nigeria’s digital economy agenda, especially as demand for broadband, financial technology services and digital communication continues to rise.

The NCC reiterated its commitment to working with operators and other stakeholders to improve quality of service and ensure better consumer experience across the telecommunications sector.
